So 'Variant 1' is a half wave rectifier in series with the mosfet and load and I'm placing this on the neutral side (the lamp will remain hot when off, also no fuse except the mains breaker, that's the ghetto part). I drew two variants in fritzing I would like to discuss what will happen if I wired this together. I figure I could chop the waveform using PWM of an arduino modified to work at 31khz. So I found some nice mosfets in my drawers, Fairchild fqpf10n20c I tried the SSRs I had in stock but unfortunately they are zero crossing SSR so firing them at non-zero voltage does nothing, impossible to use as dimmers ! I'm trying to get this done tonight using the stuff in my parts bin !
